(Trying to) Decorate For My Girls

Now that we've been living in the new casa for nearly two months, I figure it's kinda sorta time to get a move on actually decorating Chica's room instead of just painting the walls, tossing her furniture in and calling it a day.

And, since it's nearly two months 'till Chicklet's arrival (!), I figure it's kinda sorta time to get a move on actually creating the nursery, instead of just painting the walls of an empty room and calling it a day.

So the hubby and I have been plotting and planning, and today, we got our fannies to work.

Starting with...Chica's room.

When we moved in, we painted above the lovely chair rail a lavender/grey similar to the color of her old room so she'd have something familiar. But we decided not to try and recreate her original nursery ('cause it would just never turn out the same). So for some time, it's just been bare but beautiful walls, like this (except pretend that the lighting in this pic isn't totally unhelpful):

Then, about a week ago, we finally decided on a cutie-pie rug from Pottery Barn Kids. Again--not great lighting, but you'll see it's all the colors we needed--lavender, a warm grey, and a lovely cream that matches the carpet:

So we have the wall color, we pulled the trigger on a rug (oh, and we made sure when we first moved in that we bought roman shades with a blackout liner).

The task of the day: a wall decor/design above the long wall where her crib is situated.

The hubby and I found a lovely, grey two-part tree branch decal thingy (and, yes, that's the technical term) that we liked from Etsy, so we snagged it...from China. Oye. Why oh why do we always pick these things from far, far, far away vendors? Of course, the decal took its time making it stateside, but it finally did, so this morning we set to work on reading the instructions and cutting out the sections:

Poor Chica just got to hang with us in the room, but she was pretty pumped about having free reign of Mama's phone, so it was fine (and, yes, we got the Parents of The Year award).

So here's one section of the wall decal--all cut out and pieced together, with great promise:

And here's how much of it we got on the wall before we started cursing ourselves for picking out a decal with such itty-bitty leaves and branch sections:

Even Chica was looking at us all skeptical-like:

Seriously...here she is scratching her bow and headband-adorned head ('cause one or the other just isn't enough), thinking: you guys are cray-cray. Do you have any idea what you're doing???

A few hours later, about 75% of the decal was up on the wall, along with some of our blood, sweat and tears. And that's about the time we had to halt to eat and then let Chica actually nap in her room.

I have high hopes for this decal, even if it's going to take us two days and a fortune in donations to Chica's baaaaaaad word sheep piggy bank.

Meanwhile...in other room news: while Chica was napping, we (being the masochistic people that we apparently are) decided to go ahead and kick off the tree decal and flowers for Chicklet's room.

So here's what we have to work with for our girlie currently baking in the oven:

It's a lovely mint color for the walls, and fun rug that we found by chance over the holiday that has great pops of peach and grey and some warm-ish browns.

So this is the corner of the room where the glider will go (when it finally arrives--along with the furniture that's ordered but taking six weeks of sweet time to arrive):

And here are the pieces of the tree decal in all their gloriousness.

(This one was from a different Etsy vendor, located in California, so it made it here a little faster. Which gave us a little false hope that it would be less complicated overall [has history taught us nothing?]):

So while the hubby started cutting out the decal pieces, I started working on the be-a-uuuuutiful pom pom flowers I ordered (also from Etsy). I mean, would you look at this lovely peachy color???

So fast-forward about an hour and we had a chunk of the tree up, along with a couple of flowers. And that's about the time that Chica woke up.

She was pretty freaking pumped about the tree and flowers that just appeared out of nowhere.

This shot doesn't have great lighting, but it shows a couple of the flowers a little closer. Fun, eh???

Unfortunately, I'm sorry to report that while this dang tree was easier to get up than Chica's branches, it appears to have lighter adhesive backing. So now we have the complication of it not exactly staying put on the way.

Oye, oye, oye.

So stay tuned for our next installment tomorrow, when I let you know if: a) we get Chica's branches up without more bloodshed, b) we decide to keep Chicklet's tree or strip it off and start again, and c) if all of this decorating ultimately drives me over-the-ledge insane.

:)

  1. Can not believe you have the patience to do this! But, love the pom pom flowers and can't wait to see the finished product. Breathlessly waiting for the next installment...
