Monday, Science FUN Day: Coke/Mentos Explosion!

Well, m’peeps.

My evil plan to coin a random catch phrase and get my kiddos wildly pumped about each random Monday during the summer has totally worked.

(Cue evil laugh. Muhahahaha.)

By midday, I had all three of my crazies tugging on their clothes to go outside for our inaugural experiment, chanting, “Monday, science FUN day; Monday, science FUN day!”

Haha. Talk about brilliant marketing. ;)

So...for our first official science FUN day, I went with super simple, with a little bit of a wow factor.

The experiment:

Get a liter of Diet Coke and a packet of regular mentos. Drop the mentos into the open bottle and step back, stat, to watch the explosion!

So...I ended up buying three liters and three packets of mentos so that we could try multiple times and technically have one round for each kiddo.

Hilariously, the hubby was just pulling into the driveway, home for his lunch break, when we marched outside on our mission.

We decided on the lower tier of our backyard (the untamed, wild and fun part of the yard) for this particular experiment, as it was certainly a bit messy. :)

The one snag we hit was that you really need to have a proper mentos loading/dropping-in-the-bottle device, as this explosion happens immediately, so you don’t have time to just plunk the mentos down there one by one.

Daddy helped us try to fashion an empty paper towel role to the right size...

But it still wasn’t the most efficient method. I had to sort of jiggle the mentos a bit to get them to fall down into the bottle properly, and then we didn’t get optimum explosion.

Still super fun, though! These pics are from some slow-mo video the hubby took of our second try with the experiment, and by the third try, we definitely got the explosion about double this height, so, woohoo!, for improvement.

Takeaway:

I think we’ll try this one more time in a few weeks with a very proper mentos dropping device, and perhaps a 2-liter bottle instead of the smaller one I purchased.

But the kiddos were entertained, and we absolutely seeded the idea of this Monday, Science FUN Day as something to look forward to. So, victory!

And is there anything funnier than Chica taking a chug, post-experiment, with her baby doll strapped to her chest in its carrier?? Hehe. Priceless.

Happy first Monday, Science FUN Day!

Here’s hoping to many more as the weeks progress. :)

Over and out.
