Line Art/Paper Strip Abstract Sculpture

So...apparently the late-Spring, early quarantine days of our virtual school art assignments being something simple like a pencil sketch of a puppy are looooong gone.

‘Cause today, our art assignment was this:

I mean...coolio, right???

And, strangely simple.

If a bit time consuming.

Basically, you start with folding a piece of white paper accordion style. And then you draw a pattern or design in each of the accordion sections. Whatever makes your heart happy.

And I gotta day, I just lurv that I gave Chicklet and Little Man (who did this 1st grade project along with Chicklet, just for kicks and giggles) these instructions before running upstairs to help Chica with her open vowel and CVC vocabulary assignment, and when I came back downstairs...voila!

Look how well they did! :)

Excellent little artistes.

Next, you cut the accordion strips...

(I spy Little Man’s concentration tongue, hehe.)

Along with some strips of any color of construction paper.

And then you just start creating!

We utilized tape because I didn’t want to wait for glue to dry well enough for each strip. And it worked like a charm.

These two crazies seriously had a fantastic time doing this. They loved getting crazy and inventive with the layering of the strips. Especially when they could interweave and build things higher.

I mean...just look at that prideful smile. :) This project was so up my girl’s alley.

Though this was a bit involved for a crazy hectic virtual school day, it’s exactly the type of project I’d be all over during summer months when we have nothin’ but time on our hands.

I can totally see all three of my crazies (Chica had a different art assignment this week that I didn’t manage to capture in a pic) really having a lot of freestyle craft fun with this.

And the supplies are pretty simple and likely something you already have on hand.

So...I might bust this idea out again in the future, as Chicklet already brainstormed adding fun flair like pom-poms.

And we’ll count this as a major victory for project/virtual school fun.

Woohoo!

Side note: after school hours, we made a trip to the popcorn store, and yuuuuuum. It was my final birthday request that we didn’t manage to execute this weekend. Hello, fried pickle flavor!

Happy Hump Day, peeps.

Gonna be a bit crazy again tomorrow, with lots o’ moving parts and another day of Chicklet standardized testing, so wish us luck!

Over and out.
