Stopping To Smell the (LEGO) Roses

Oh my goodness, peeps, we had the happiest, most solid family Saturday!

Our first in many weeks without travel, social commitments, school commitments, errands, a mile-long to-do list, heaps of yard work or alllllll of the above all at once.

I mean, don’t get me wrong, there’s a lot we could have been doing. But we made a conscious decision to spend the day in low-key, indoor mode.

Beyond a bit of chosen exercise for the hubby and I (and some constant churning of laundry; the greatest of all necessary evils), we had the luxury of just relaxing. As a family. :)

This kind of freedom had been so rare for us these days that we kept looking at the clock and then at each others, like: Really???? We still have more of our day?? Without a schedule???

It was heavenly.

And one of the loveliest chunks of our family time was spent in the living room, watching the current season of Spring Baking Championship while…building LEGOs.

The impetus behind this LEGO building was actually selfish, believe it or not. Months and months (and months!) ago, I bought myself a LEGO kit. That’s right: myself.

I actually really lurv building LEGOs and rarely get the chance these days—other than an occasional assist for the kiddos.

But one day, I came across this beautiful flower set, and I just had to have it. So I bought it! And set it aside for a fun little me time activity when wet I had the chance, and…welp. That was ages ago.

At long last…today was the day. :) Look how lovely the flowers are!

Seriously, I had the most contended morning, building away as we spent family time.

However, I knew that if I wanted to build my set myself, without my little gremlins taking over the project, I had to give them their own odds and ends to work on, ha.

Luckily, Nanna recently stocked us up with sweet springtime sets over Easter, so it was the perfect time to bust them out.

You get a LEGO, you get a LEGO, everybody gets a LEGO!

Everybody settled in their own little area and we spent such a happy couple of hours. :)

I know it seems silly to wax on and on about how enjoyable it was to just chill and build, but I really can’t emphasis enough just how lovely it was. And drama free. A happy, happy time.

Just look at these sweet babies.

And look at my beautiful flowers! I put them in a fun little $7 watering can I found at Homegoods and they make me smile every time I walk past them.

So realistic!

Another really great part of our day: sending the kiddos upstairs to entertain themselves while the hubby and I watched some TV alone.

It’s a beautiful thing to spend time together, but also, a really fantastic thing to know you deserve a little adult time.

The kiddos pretty much want to be with us or play with us, or have us entertain them 24/7 (when they’re not on electronics, ha) and believe me, I know how lucky we are to be in these years when they want us!

But. When they started grumbling because we were sending them upstairs to play, it was really, really fun to give them a “friendly” reminder of all we’ve done for them this particular week. Just like every week.

Chaperoning a Sea World Field trip, spending an entire day at school as a Watch Dog, snuggling movie afternoons (twice this week, to combat the stress of standardized testing), special one-on-one shopping trips for bathing suits for an upcoming swim party, a lively evening out with friends as part of a school fundraiser, a special trip to the bookstore (again, to combat standardized testing), special reading time, outdoor play time, and…to cap it all off, a dine-in movie out tonight.

I mean…come on! Our babies are more than taken care of! And Mama and Daddy really enjoyed some couch time watching our own TV shows. :)

All part of the lovely, relaxing Saturday we really really needed, in order to try and refill our cups.

Which made it all the more fun to head off for our Mario movie (where we ran into some friends!) to cap off our day.

Oh! And like a super-special bonus…our deer friends were waiting for us in our yard when we returned home, and it’s been awhile since we’ve seen them. :)

Life is crazy, it’s going to continue to be crazy as we tackle this final month of school, but…days like today go a long way toward maintaining our sanity, and it’s important to acknowledge them for the gift they are.

So grateful for this happy family Saturday, peeps. :)

More mañana.

Over and out.
