Okay, peeps.
Holy goodness, we rounded out our Maine jaunt in the best way--with a fun excursion twenty minutes down the road to Kennebunkport, a squall that brought an insane, snow-globe-Hallmark-like snow moment, and a picture-perfect sunset (snowing, again!) excursion to a lighthouse!
It's so hard to see and do much when family visits are centered around holidays. Between the travel to and from, the actual holiDAY, and the general desire to visit and spend some down time...sightseeing usually takes a bit of a back seat. But we were so fortunate to manage a glorious round of it on Friday--I only wish Little Bro and his crew hadn't departed before the fun!
I know very little about Kennebunkport, beyond the name and the Bush Family associations, but it was such a picturesque little downtown area with so many fun shops to explore, a Christmas tree complete with buoy ornaments, and a fantastic restaurant that supplied me my very first ever lobster roll!
So, there we were, in the upstairs seating area of this adorable little restaurant, when we glanced toward the window and realized it was...SNOWING.
Like, legitimately, gorgeously snowing!
We were so shocked we couldn't believe it! We literally grabbed our coats and high-tailed it back outside to bask in the unexpected beauty of it all!
Our waitress (who totally encouraged us to rush outside) called it a "squall" and I know very little about what that means. I only know that it came on suddenly, really intensified, was beautiful to stand within, and all the more magical because we were on Main Street with a giant tree behind us, adorable little shops with white accumulating on their rooftops, and and the port within sight.
Truly, I felt like I was in a movie--and totally drove my kiddos crazy with as many pics as we could manage (and, trust me, we weren't the only ones!).
By the time we made it back inside to our glorious lobster rolls (I ordered a lobster bisque one, and I'm pretty sure I started with the best, and it's all downhill from here, ha), the snow only continued for a few more minutes and then was gone as fast as it came.
All the more beautiful for the rarity of it all. :)
We spent another hour or two shopping around the dock square and everybody snagged a few souvenirs and something warm to drink.
By the time we wrapped things up in Kennebunkport and made a quick stop back at the house, we were racing against the early-sunset clock to make it to a lighthouse that was in the opposite direction!
According to our map calculations, we were going to arrive just before the state park closed and the sun went down, but we decided to try, and, man, I'm glad we did!
We made it just as the sun was doing its gorgeous thing--and it started snowing, again!
It was absolutely freezing, but I'm so grateful we got some touristy Maine lighthouse pics to round out our day!
All the gorgeous Maine-vibe things. :) I'm so grateful we crammed a couple of outings into our quick visit, and grateful for a relatively smooth (if long) day returning back to Texas, yesterday.
I have no doubt that it's going to be a rude awakening to get back in the groove, tomorrow. We've spent the day regrouping and doing massive amounts of laundry and chores, amidst a tiny bit of downtime. But, tomorrow, we'll hit the ground running.
DECEMBER!
It's crazy.
Exactly 15 whirlwind days of school and so many activities before we're on another break. It's going to zoom by!
But I'm grateful for this Thanksgiving Break, for time with family and new places to explore, and...I think we'll continue with our Gratitude Jar just a little bit longer. ;)
Happy Sunday, peeps!
Over and out.
