A Visit To The Tree Farm

Oh my goodness, I’m so stinking, freaking excited that it’s mid-September, and even in the inferno of Texas, Fall has to be on its way sometime soon—and that mean, some landscaping projects can begin!

I’ve shared some of my tiny little DIY backyard projects on this here blog over that past couple of years, and although the flowerbeds we’ve created from scratch aren’t anything spectacular, there’s a certain satisfaction and investment to doing them ourselves (and to be honest, I’ve actually done a decent chunk of it sans-hubby so I can just do my thing and ask forgiveness later, ha).

Luckily, at this point, he trusts me to just make the plans and let me roll with it since he likes what I’ve done so far, so when I told him this Fall we would FINALLY be purchasing some small trees for the backyard, he knew I meant it after five years of plotting and scheming.

It was such a joy to visit our tree farm that we lurv, since the last time we made a trek out there, it was two-and-a-half years ago, to select our beautiful magnolias for the side of our house.

Needless to say, it was a MUDDY excursion, after a week of rain around here, but it was fun to be there, and really feel like we were putting a lot of love into our selections.

Please note this awesomesauce, “but there are bugs and mud” face from my eldest, ha:

Little Man clearly had no problems with the mud. ;)

Rain boots, we love you.

One of my favorite bits about these tree farm excursions is the tagging of our selected trees. It’s so dang fun to go up and down rows of the variety we select, and then claim the very bestest that will come live with us.

For this round, we decided on three, single-trunk lilac trees, and we found perfect ones that were straight and strong, with happy branches.

And who better to tie our “taken” ribbons than my skilled knot-maker?? ;)

We’re also bringing another magnolia to live with us in the backyard that’s just like the ones at the side of the house. I have grand plans to create a little pathway from our porch to this tree, and then fine a fun, circular bench to sit beneath it. We’ll see how that works out, ha.

And, lastly, we had a beautiful impulse purchase of these gorgeous rose of sharon pillar bushes. Two of them, that will look so lovely in the beds we’ll create. :)

Chica was pumped about the color of these flowers, ha. Now let’s hope I don’t kill them. ;)

We’ll have some work to do over the next couple of weeks to dig and prep the beds where this stuff will be living, but I am pumped, pumped, pumped to finally be adding a bit more flair to the backyard.

So stay tuned as things progress!

More on other things—including Halloween making an appearance in the casa—tomorrow!

Nighty, night, m’peeps!
