Buh Bye Kitchen

Well, peeps.

It’s happened.

We finally lost full functionality of the kitchen.

We’re staring down Week 10 of this whole winter storm disaster restoration, and managed to keep the kitchen fairly functional up until now. Which was vital—especially given the hubby’s food restrictions and limitations.

But we’re now headed into the final, massive restoration push. Hopefully, within the next month, we can get this whole shebang behind us. But since the hardwood flooring installation begins Monday, the kitchen had to go.

Not gonna lie...it’s a bit unsettling to look at some of these pics that are so reminiscent of our really hard move here, and subsequent renovation nightmare. But I suppose we’re just giving these walls many, many more stories to tell. And living through a bit of deja vu in the process.

Yesterday morning, all was calm and peaceful and cleared off the counters for the plumber to arrive and disconnect and move the dishwasher, disconnect the sink, and cap off the gas line and remove the stove.

Both before and after the plumber’s arrival, I hustled to finish removing all the dishes out of the upper cabinets...

Just in time to get them relocated anywhere at all within the house that I could find a teensy tiny bit of space. And then the countertops were removed in the evening and stored in the garage.

Hello, quartz friends. Hang tight until it’s time to come back in.

For the record, we hope to be able to reuse two out of our three original pieces when it’s all put back together (the third will have to be a new section for a myriad of reasons). But I couldn’t bear to let them just haul off that third piece (the one in the front) that we can’t reuse (holy money and material just wasted!), so we’re keeping it for the time being. Who knows when we might have a countertop or bathroom vanity need for it.

Then, this morning, things got lively when the demolition crew arrived. And a few short hours later, it was all gone.

Can we just pause for a minute to discuss the “excellent” craftsmanship that was revealed on the lower sections of this stone arch when the cabinets were removed?? I mean, holy for the love, did they just chuck random leftovers in that direction and slap some mortar on top???

Oye. I wish I didn’t have that visual to forever know what’s lurking back there. Or to worry about an imminent collapse, considering the luck of this dang casa.

Oh well. It’s held up for this long, right??

So...by midday, we had a garage packed full.

I have a donation pickup scheduled for next week, as I hate to just let these go to waste. I mean, the cabinet doors and drawers were barely more then a year and a half old! Hurts my heart. I’d rather them go to a happy new home and someone who needs them.

So...there you have it.

The kitchen is long gone and we’re now headed into a really strenuous but hopefully fruitful couple of weeks.

Hardwood flooring was delivered today and that process will begin on Monday. It should take the entire week, with baseboard/crown moulding installation and painting, to follow. But then it will finally feel like major progress had been made.

A few other exterior things are happening in the coming week, as well. But if we can just get through the next 14 days, I feel like we’ll start to see the light at the end of this water-disaster tunnel!

Wish us luck. Especially considering the hubby’s 40th birthday is also coming up within this 14 day period, and this is not exactly how we planned on marking that milestone, ha. Perhaps it’s best we just let it fly on by like any other bday, yes???

Stay healthy, stay sane, peeps.

Over and out.
