My Christmas Consolation Cake

Well, peeps.

It happened.

I managed to make it through three glorious days—the 26th, 27th, and 28th—of indulging fun family time, playing with new toys, devoting extra TLC to the kiddos, and just marinating in the holiday vibes that continued.

And then the 29th hit, and so did the ennui—BIG TIME.

I’m no stranger to “The Wee,” as I jokingly refer to my ennui at home. Anytime I’m coming down off the fun and excitement of something major (like a holiday season, or a big trip that’s been on the horizon for a long time), I have a day or two of being bummed out.

Totally normal and expected.

Boooooo.

Of course, it doesn’t help that it’s a total bummer to have to take down all EIGHT of our stinking Christmas trees—not to mention, all of the rest of our indoor and outdoor decor. I mean, talk about a punch to the gut when you’re low.

But I’ve found it’s really helpful for me, personally, to just rip off the bandage and started packing stuff away ASAP so the kiddos can return to school with all that tediousness out of the way, because life gets crazy busy again, and it’s hard to have it hanging over my head.

So…that’s what I’ve spent the past two days doing: de-Christmas-ing the casa. UGH.

Oh well. A necessary part of moving on and resetting for the New Year.

And here are a couple other things that help with the ennui…

Chocolate:

The hubby wanted a dense chocolate cake today, and even when I have to make it gluten and dairy-free, I’m still game.

Enjoying the little things:

Yup. Gorgeous sunset appreciation helped this evening. It was all oranges and yellows on the way home from an errand.

And by the time I turned into the neighborhood, it was raspberries and purples.

Replacing one holiday with ANOTHER:

I am soooooo here for the manufactured, marketing-driven mania of Valentine’s. Nothing helps me get over the sadness of our barren house, post-Christmas, like putting up our Valentine decor. So that’s what we’ve done.

So…farewell, holiday season 2021. We lived you up as best we could, and we’ll see you again next year!

Now.

To remind myself of the happy family time before the ennui hit…here are more pics of some of the kiddos’ presents we’ve been enjoying. And I’m happy to report there’s been a decent bit of Harry reading, too. :)

All good things.

And here’s to hoping for a better mood mañana!

Chicklet’s Science Kit:

Little Man’s LEGOs:

Chica’s Sewing Machine:

And, lastly…Chica spent time on her own over the past two days, expertly building her Harry LEGO chess set. :)

Okay, peeps.

It’s super late so I’m packing it in.

Happy Almost-Friday, and New Year’s Eve!

Over and out.
