Concussed, And Crunching It

Well, peeps.

It’s been a week.

Not a bad one, per se, but I’m definitely approaching this Friday evening feeling a bit drained—and expecting to stay that way, considering it’s Chicklet’s birthday weekend. Oye.

Part of the reason I spent a decent bit of the day running against the clock trying to get a crap-ton done?? The wrench that was thrown in my schedule, yesterday, all thanks to Little Man being sent home from school at midday, with…a minor concussion.

Can I get another OYE??

As the story goes…during indoor recess, he dove for an interception, tripped over an opposing team member’s outstretched leg, and landed on the side of his head pretty dang hard. Ugggggh.

He didn’t notify any teachers right away, but he had plenty of buddy witnesses. So a bit later, when his head was hurting in class, his teacher sent him to the nurse for an ice pack, which didn’t do enough to ease the throbbing pain, and when he presented with dizziness, back he went and call me, they did.

He has no discernible bump, he was coherent enough to answer basic questions and more complicated math equations. His pupils were fine, and he never vomited. But…best to bring him home, give him pain meds, and monitor the situation.

And for the record, keeping concussed peeps awake is no longer a thing. According to both the nurse and the AI bots that will eventually take over the world, ha:

After a Happy Meal, some medicine and a hot shower, he did pass out, immediately, and slept for about 40 minutes (very unusual for my boy). I was glad he got some shut-eye—and then, I was at a loss about what to do with him, next.

Because, concussion protocol does dictate you stay away from phones, iPads and TVs. So…what do you do with a nine-year-old boy who’s concussed, stuck inside on a rainy day, can’t play, and can’t be on any screens????

He read for a tiny bit. And chilled. And I might have let him watch ten tiny minutes of something.

Then I told him to draw something, and he did…

And then, when he still needed something to do, I busted out not one but two Crunch Labs engineering projects he could complete with the pamphlet directions instead of the iPad directions, and it kept him occupied. :)

He made it through school, today, and seems fine, so…I guess we’ll just have to be extra-careful for the launch of his basketball season, tomorrow???

Again…can I get an OYE.

Ready to try and wind down for the evening once I wrap a hoard of presents and build a balloon arch, ha.

Still. I’m grateful it’s FRIDAY.

More mañana, peeps.

Over and out.
